It is now recognized that water-ice, together with unknown other ices in smaller proportions, is a major mineral material for the construction of the satellites of the major planets. The rock/ice mixture is probably differentiated in the larger members and the rock itself could be separated into a ferrous core enclosed by a silicate mantle. A comparable differentiation of material is possible, though not necessary, in the smaller members. The satellites of Uranus might contain a greater proportion of rock than those of Saturn. If this proved to be the case one would be involved with matters relating to the early history of the Solar System.
