This obituary is based on information and personal reminiscences provided by (in alphabetical order) Ken Freeman, Jesse Greenstein, Katherine and Gerald Kron, Guido Münch, John Norris, Allan Sandage, Nick Suntzeff, Virginia Trimble, Albert Whitford, and Bob Williams. The original text was put together by Virginia Trimble with additions by the PASP Editors, Anne Cowley and David Hartwick. An earlier obituary by Kenneth Freeman has appeared in Astronomy and Geophysics (41, 1.36 [2000]), portions of which are reproduced here. A shorter version of this obituary will be published in the Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society.
