The PPARC has funded a study to investigate the feasibility and scientific case for providing a Laser Guide Star facility for the WHT. Elements of the study include identification of key science drivers, site monitoring with measurements of returns from a laser excitation of the sodium layer, a straw-man engineering proposal for the laser launch system and development of models to predict the system's performance and to assist in defining an error budget for the components. A view on the wavelength coverage is presented and some principal features of instrumentation that would complement an LGS facility are proposed.
