Andriesse's theory of stellar mass loss (1979, 1980) has not found general acceptance despite its success in explaining the observed loss rates of a broad variety of stars. It is noted that this probably has to do with its abstract formulation in terms of a theory of thermodynamic fluctuations, and with its failure to explain the loss rate of red giants or supergiants. This paper outlines the specific physics and clarifies the case of red giants or supergiants.
