From the spectroscopic observations of SS 433 made with a 6-m telescope, an effort is made to fit an analytic law to the shortening of the precession period for the years 1978-1981. A function is presented that can give the variation for 85 percent of the time that SS 433 was monitored. It is noted that during 39 months of observation, the rate of period shortening changed from -0.0005 + or - 0.0002 to -0.0197 + or - 0.0008. The analytic law is arrived at by using the redshifts z(+), z(-) measured for the 'relativistic' emission lines in the spectrum of SS 433 as published by Ciatti et al. (1981).
