The Biermann (1950) mechanism for production of the solar magnetic field is examined. The mechanical and electrostatic equilibrium of a star is briefly analyzed, and then differential rotation and its relation to the Biermann magnetic field generator is discussed. Biermann's finding that a purely static electric field cannot prevent the occurrence of pressure gradients which cause a differential motion of the electron gas relative to the ions, thus causing currents and magnetic fields to arise, is analyzed in detail for the case of a 'cylindrical' star. Other spontaneous mechanisms, which are far less efficient, are examined as well.
