An effective method for calculating production-rate profiles of excited ionospheric components under direct electron impact is proposed which is based on knowledge of the mean energy losses expended on the excitation of a single particular gaseous state. These mean losses are calculated for the states of N2, O2, and O I which participate in 1D and 1S production in the polar ionosphere. Results obtained with the proposed method are compared with those obtained on the basis of the two-beam approximation.
