Galaxies: Kinematics And Dynamics, Galaxies: Spiral
Scientific paper
This article attempts to account for the symmetrical emergence of spiral arms. The observed non-thermal component of the radio source occupying the very center of the Galaxy suggests strongly that this region is the seat of a magnetic field and of high energy charged particles. A good number of the observed large scale phenomena in our galaxy and other spirals, unexplained so far, may be accounted for if we assume that there exists a poloidal magnetic field located at the galactic nucleus with its axis perpendicular to that of galactic rotation.
