The behavior of gas in the gravitational field of a cosmological string is examined. It is shown that this problem is equivalent to the classical problem of the supersonic motion of a slender wedge. Gas heating behind the shock is evaluated. An analysis is made of the possibility of observing strings during their passage through the intergalactic gas in a galaxy cluster or through the interstellar gas of the Galaxy.
