Equations are formulated which describe self-consistent variations of the parameters of the neutral, charged, and vibrationally excited components of the ionospheric plasma. An investigation is presented of the role of vibrationally excited nitrogen in the formation of the F-region as a function of the time of day, the season, and the level of solar activity. It is shown that the role of vibrationally excited nitrogen is considerable in the quiet midlatitude F-region, and can be used to elucidate the long-period variations of the basic structural parameters in this region. The effect of vibrationally excited nitrogen can be significant in the disturbed ionosphere as well.
