The implications of spectral line observations in the frequency range 200-350 GHz for techniques which infer physical properties of galactic molecular clouds are reviewed. Millimeter observations at high frequencies have made it possible to study several transitions of abundant molecules which improved the determination of temperatures and densities. The submillimeter region is an advantageous and powerful extension.
