The question of the existence of an acceleration region in the magnetosphere of a pulsar is discussed. It is shown that the increase in current through cascade creation of particles will be stopped by their own radiative electric field. In this case a new 'spark' cannot arise near an existing one, so that the formation both of a long-lived acceleration region and of long-lived filaments in which particle creation takes place are possible.
