The possibility of using slitless spectroscopy to identify field stars which contaminate cluster color-magnitude diagrams is explored as an alternative to astrometric and radial velocity studies. The spectra, analyzed with multivariate analysis, are combined with broad-band photometric data to determine rough spectral types and luminosity classes for individual stars. The foreground reddening and spatial distribution of field stars can be estimated in a statistical way, which serves as an independent check on the analysis of the cluster photometry. The technique is applied to the open cluster Be 21, where it was found that only the reddest stars (B - V > 1.5 mag) in the magnitude-limited sample (12.0 < V < 15.0 mag) may be cluster members, presumably evolved stars. The foreground reddening to the cluster appears to be at least E(B - V) = 0.7 mag, in agreement with the previously published investigation.
