Effective collision strengths for all the fine-structure forbidden transitions within the 3p3 ground configuration of Ar IV have been calculated in a 7-state close-coupling approximation including configuration interaction in the target representation. A comparison with data available in the literature shows that the refinements used in the present work result in important changes, which should considerably affect astrophysical diagnostics, for example in nebulae. This is illustrated with the case of the electron density-dependent line intensity ratio I(λ4741.5)/I(λ4712.7).
