A new method of source size determination for type III bursts from swept frequency recordings received from spacecraft has been proposed. The method uses the frequency profiles of the ionospheric cutoffs for the ordinary and extraordinary burst radiation. The sizes of the burst sources are deduced from a regression based on a limited sample of events (4 bursts, 19 cutoff profiles). The mean e-folding radii vary from 0.9° at 4.2 MHz to 3.4° at 0.7 MHz, which is in general agreement with determinations by Dulk et al. (1984). The first determinations of source sizes are made for frequencies between 2 and 4.2 MHz.
