The presence of a large galaxian density enhancement in the Ursa Major-Virgo region renders current determinations of the galactic luminosity function highly sensitive to any peculiar solar motion in the Virgo direction. In order to illustrate the nature and possible severity of this bias, a linear Virgo-centric infall model with an infall velocity of 300 km/s has been applied to the recent luminosity calibration for spiral galaxies by Tammann, Yahil, and Sandage. Adoption of the perturbed velocity field results in factor-of-2 changes in parts of the total luminosity function, and much larger changes in the luminosity class calibration, especially for giant Sc spirals, where the overall shape of the luminosity function is significantly altered, from an open-ended Schecter function to a narrow closed function. The results indicate that until the local velocity field is accurately mapped, luminosity functions and space densities based on magnitude-limited redshift catalogs should be applied with considerable caution. They also suggest the Malmquist errors are unlikely to have greatly influenced previous studies based on Sc I galaxy samples.
