A detailed calculation of the statistical equilibrium of C2 under conditions prevailing in diffuse interstellar clouds is presented. New molecular data are used which allow for the consideration of each individual transition; cascade coefficients are built to make the computation tractable. The model is applied to the line of sight toward ζ Oph. A class of models is found, characterised by the strength of the adopted radiation field, which accounts for both the excitation of the lower levels of H2 and most levels of C2.
