Galaxy-Galaxy Interactions, Star Formation, Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Scientific paper
We have investigated the connection between star formation and galaxy-galaxy interactions using a large (20K galaxies) sample drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find, using extinction and aperture corrected Hα data, enhanced star formation in galaxies with close companions which we interpret as strong evidence of triggered star formation. Using a subsample of galaxies detected by IRAS we find that far-infrared and Hα derived star-formation rates show a very similar trend with companion separation. Finally, we find that galaxies with companions closer than about 50 kpc have on average significantly more centrally concentrated light profiles which we interpret as evidence for nuclear starbursts.
