The composition of interstellar dust is best studied using mid-infrared spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the far-infrared can make some unique contributions to this field. This includes studies on the Mg/Fe ratio and the temperature of crystalline silicates, the presence of carbonates, and the presence of (pure) homonuclear ices (eg., N2, O2). In addition, the lowest vibrational modes of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon molecules occur in the far-infrared range and these modes present a powerful tool for the identification of specific species present in space. Finally, far from resonances, the far-infrared continuum dust emissivity can be well represented by a β-law (eg.,Q~νβ). Laboratory experiments show that, depending on material, the exponent β ranges between 0.7 and 2.7. Moreovere, this exponent depends on temperature.
