The HERSCHEL Space Observatory will bring unique observing capabilities to many fields of astronomy, and the circumstellar disks around young stars are no exception. Photometry and low resolution spectra obtained with PACS and SPIRE will help fill in an important gap in the measured SEDs protoplanetary disks which is critical for deducing the geometry and dust distribution in disks. Spectra obtained with PACS will open a new and currently poorly charted field of dust mineralogy in the far IR. Last but not least, HIFI will be used to search for spectral lines not observable from the ground because of atmospheric transmission. The water lines, which probe the mixing process in disks, are a notable example.
