The possibility of forming a cataclysmic binary from a star-planet system is investigated. It is shown that the fate of the system is determined essentially by the ratio of the accretion drag timescale to the mass loss timescale. Under certain simplifying assumptions, the evolution of the separation is calculated analytically. It is found that a certain amount of fine tuning is required for the formation of a close binary, however, formation is possible for reasonable parameters. The effect of mass transfer on tidal evolution of the binary is also investigated and it is shown that tidally unstable systems may become even more unstable as a result of mass transfer.
