The International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) is realised through a series of precise radio interferometric (Very Long Baseline Interferometry, VLBI) measurements of selected bright compact extragalactic sources. Using the technique of phase-referencing, VLBI has a potential to observe many (up to ˜ 104 ) faint radio sources, inherently relating their positions to the reference objects with ICRF coordinates known accurately. Here we briefly describe the results of a pilot project for a Deep Extragalactic VLBI-Optical Survey (DEVOS). We comment on the perspective of using such a survey for tying the radio and optical reference frames.
