We have developed a technique that estimates the threedimensional extinction in the Galactic plane. The colour distribution (J-K) of stars from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) are compared to that of stars from the Besançon model of the Galaxy, to which we do not add the effects of extinction. If the luminosity function and the density laws of the different populations are well modelled, any differences in the colour distributions will be due to interstellar extinction. After having described the method, we will show the results for several interesting regions in the Galactic plane.
