Recent observational evidence regarding the evolution of massive stars is reviewed in terms of its implications on understanding the stellar sequence. The evidence includes IUE observations of high evaporation levels in massive star evolution, observations of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars as stellar cores, and the interpretation of Wolf-Rayet galaxies as starbursts. Also considered are: the differences between the numbers of O-stars, blue and red supergiants, and WR stars in galaxies characterized by star formation; the qualitative differences between supernovae progenitors in galaxies of different Z-values; and the dependence of chemical yields on the initial value of Z and mass-loss rates. The metallicity Z is found to be a highly significant variable regarding the evolution of massive stars, and the manner in which the stars explode is also linked to this denominator.
