Scientific paper

We are observing NGC 4414 as part of the Hubble Heritage Project, with the objective of combining this dataset with previous HST observations of this galaxy. The aim of the Heritage Project is to provide spectacular HST color images for public release, ou treach, and education. This Heritage observation will revisit NGC 4414 to obtain a separate pointing of the other half of the galaxy. There will be some overlap between the two pointings. Previously used filters and approximate exposure times will be repe ated. This will minimize efforts when producing a color image from the combined datasets. Additional objectives: While preparing the existing datasets of NGC 4414 for the Hubble Heritage project, an uncatalogued variable object was found in the images. Si nce the position of this star will fall in the overlap region of the second pointing, we will be duplicating all filters that have been previously used to observe this galaxy and specifically the variable object. Thus, the o ne filter change from F555W to F60 6W in the short exposures {see below} is justified.
