The brightness variations shown by late-type stars are caused by the presence and evolution of photospheric activity centers. In order to disentangle and correctly interpret the causes that contribute to the observed brightness variability on different time scales, late-type stars need to be observed systematically for several years e.g. by robotic telescopes.
