Hst Proposal Id #7528 Clusters Of Galaxies

Scientific paper

vspace-0.1in HST has now imaged over 40 clusters covering redshifts out to a z of 1. Over half of these have multicolor data. This extensive collection of cluster images provides an extraordinary opportunity to examine the evolution of cluster galaxies, and in particular to investigate the potentially dramatic effect of "galaxy harassment" citemkl+96 on cluster members with M >~ M_* + 2. This evolution, inflicted upon lighter cluster members by multiple near encounters with other cluster members, should produce strong changes in the morphology, luminosity and the morphological-density relation of dwarfs with time and with position in the cluster. Here we show that this evolution can be studied effectively by comparison of HST archival cluster images with HST background fields and with our ground-based images of nearby clusters.
