There is good evidence that M82, the prototype starburst galaxy, has suffered two starburst episodes. The extensively- studied active starburst is confined to its central 500 pcs. However, a high surface brightness region about 1 kpc from the center, M82B, has exactly the properties expected for the remnant of an older starburst of comparable amplitude which occurred about 100--200 Myr years earlier. Its characteristics are similar to those of the "E+A" galaxies often found in distant clusters of galaxies. The earlier event may have produced a rich system of "super star clusters" similar to that discovered by HST in the active starburst. This is a unique opportunity to compare two discrete bursts of star formation, produced under similar circumstances, and their cluster systems at close range. We propose to obtain the first high resolution images of the fossil starburst site in M82 with WFPC2 and NICMOS.
