High-Pressure Apparatus, Shock Tubes, Diamond Anvil Cells
Scientific paper
The first recorded attempt of an experimental study of materials under high pressure dates from the XVIII century, but a systematic development of this field has started only towards the end of the XIX century. A big leap forward occurred in this kind of experiments with the discovery of the diamond anvil cell around the middle of the last century. The aim of this lecture is to briefly review the historical development of experimental work under static high pressure, discuss the principles of functioning of the diamond anvil cell and experiments using it, and end with a discussion of a few examples of astrophysically and geophysically important materials.
