We investigate the influence of rapid variations in the stratification of solar-type stars on the low-degree acoustic oscillation frequencies. The signature in the oscillation frequencies that is produced by these rapid variations is approximated by periodic functions with periods that are twice the acoustic depths of the centres of the rapid variations. We show how an approximation to these variations leads to a simple representation of the oscillatory contributions to the second frequency differences, which can be used as a diagnostic of the gross structure of the star, such as the helium abundance and the extent of the outer convection zone.
