We propose a comprehensive spectroscopic study of the emission line kinematics, gas excitation structure, and stellar population gradients in a well-defined sample of 24 nearby <= 17 Mpc galactic nuclei, aimed at understanding the relative importance of accretion onto black holes and of star formation in powering various manifestations of nuclear activity. At a spatial resolution of ~7 pc, this program will provide a tenfold increase of spatial resolution, compared to ground- based surveys, and at least a 50-fold increase in contrast between compact emission sources <= few pc and the surrounding stellar light. The galaxies are drawn from the sample of Ho et al. 1995 and are known to exhibit some nuclear activity, revealing itself by its line emission Seyferts, LINERs and HII nuclei. For each galaxy we will obtain long-slit spectra with STIS at 1Angstrom resolution covering O I Lambda6300 to S II Lambda6731, and at 10Angstrom resolution covering 2900Angstrom to 5700Angstrom. The high resolution spectra will be used to search for broad components in HAlpha and for velocity gradients, indicative of gas rotation or other ordered motions. The same data will be used to search for line-ratio gradients, diagnostic of the energetic processes in the nucleus. The low resolution spectra will be used primarily to map spatial variations in the stellar populations, and search for young, compact star clusters like those found in the centers of the Milky Way and M33.
