Hst Proposal Id #7339 Galaxies

Scientific paper

We propose to obtain two-band WFPC-2 images of a unique sample of 12 faint blue compact galaxies at redshifts up to z 0.7, that are excellent new candidates for being spheroidal galaxies {such as NGC 205}, caught in the act of undergoing a major star forming event. For all but one of these galaxies, emission-line velocity widths from using the Keck echelle spectrograph yield narrow values less than 50 kms. The new HST data will provide the critical measurements of size to derive the expected small masses. Their very blue colors, small sizes, high luminosities, strong emission lines, and low velocity widths all suggest these objects most resemble the local population of extreme star-forming HII galaxies. Without additional star formation, they will fade by several magnitudes after a few Gyrs to reach the low luminosities and surface brightnesses characteristic of spheroidal galaxies. Thus we may be witnessing, in-situ, the last major episode of star formation in today's dwarf, low surface brightness spheroidals.
