The fundamental principles, instrumentation, and astronomical applications of VLBI are surveyed and illustrated with drawings, photographs, diagrams, radio images, and maps. Consideration is given to the resolution advantages offered by VLBI over conventional radio telescopes and telescope arrays; the need for cooperation among astrometrists, astronomers, and geodesists; the organizational structure of VLBI networks and the problems of assigning observing time; VLBI observations of radio galaxies and superluminal sources; VLBI estimates of the distance to astronomical objects; and ESA-NASA design studies for space VLBI facilities (Quasat).
