Hst Proposal Id #7224 Clusters Of Galaxies

Scientific paper

Spatially-resolved IR photometry of the aligned radio galaxy 3C 324 {z=1.206} and its surrounding cluster of E galaxies should be an important step in our understanding of the alignment effect in powerful radio galaxies and in our study of the passive evolution of the oldest systems. Ground-based K-band imaging by Dickinson and collaborators has located a surrounding cluster of fairly uniform profile, very red galaxies: with NICMOS we intend to examine the galaxies' morphological uniformity, absolute H-band fluxes, and effective radii needed to evaluate a Tolman-like cosmological test. Much of the integration time will utilize a filter selected to transmit the redshifted H-alpha line. The collaborators on this investigation are Mark Dickinson {Postdoc, STScI} and Andrew Bunker {NICMOS Postdoc, UC Berkeley}.
