A program encompassing a study of both the stars and interstellar material in starburst nuclei will test ideas about the triggering of starbursts and whether starbursts propagate outwards in a nucleus. This data set will also permit a better understanding of the age of the starburst, the excitation mechanisms for lines such as [FeII] and H2 which can result from either shocks or from UV photons, test the direct association of [FeII] with SNRs, and will permit detection of individual M supergiants in the nearest starbursts. Parallel observations will be used to search for HII regions outside the nucleus via P-alpha imaging.
