It is widely believed that Enceladus must be the source of material in Saturn's E ring, because the number density of ring particles is highest at precisely the orbit of Enceladus. Furthermore, large areas of the surface of Enceladus, as seen in Voyager images, are remarkably free of impact craters, indicating some type of surface modification. While there is as yet no convincing model for the expulsion of micron-size particles from the surface of Enceladus, some form of aqueous volcanism might be responsible for re-population of the E ring. With Enceladus placed in the coronagraph hole, deep exposures will permit examination of the E-ring in the immediate vicinity of the satellite to see if there are structures that would tie the source of the ring particles to Enceladus. Filters are chosen to determine the color of the ring particles and to look in the water-ice absorption band. To minimize the effects of scattered light from Saturn from other satellites, observations should be made near greatest elongation of Enceladus from Saturn and when no other satellites are nearby.
