If a jet emanating from a galactic nucleus collides with an interstellar cloud, the jet will presumably induce shocks in the cloud. Imaging in the [FeII] line can test whether such shocks occur in the cases of the M87 jet, knot A, where polarimtry suggests a jet- cloud collision, and of the 3C273 jet where it impacts the intergalactic medium. Broadband images will be used 1} to check whether energy loss effects can be observed along the lengths of the jet by looking for changes in spectral index along the jet; 2} to measure the widths of the jets for comparison with the radio widths to estimate the relative lifetimes of the particles. The spectral index measurement will benefit from shorter wavelength data which exist in the HST archive for M87 but which will require a single WFPC exposure for 3C273.
