The chemical and thermal balance structure of dense gas irradiated by
FUV and X-ray photons is explored. The relevance of these so-called PDRs
(FUV) and XDRs (X-ray) for AGN and YSOs is discussed. Observational line
diagnostics and chemical tracers are summarized.
