Degenerate Stars: Thermodynamics

Scientific paper

Constraints on otherwise independent thermodynamic variables requires a rethinking of the criterion for strongly degenerate systems. The same criterion that would imply a strongly degenerate homogeneous gas becomes a stability criterion for the absence of a radiation dominated star once the criterion of thermogravitational equilibrium is imposed. Constraints which make the entropy a decreasing function of the temperature require a reformulation of the second law where the guiding principle is the concavity property with respect to the energy.
