An axisymmetric gasdynamic model for the interaction of a comet ionosphere with the solar wind is calculated numerically by the Babenko-Rusanov method. The self-consistent solution determines the shape and dimensions of three strong discontinuities: the bow shock in the solar wind, the contact surface, and the inner shock in the cometary gas. Allowance is made for the 'mass loading' of the solar wind due to photoionization of neutral cometary particles and for the resonance charge exchange experienced by cometary ions.
