It is suggested that the IMF Bz component controls partially the geometry of the cross-section (y-z plane) of the plasma sheet. A given vacuum superposition model suggests that the cross-section has a dumbbell shape for the IMF Bz less than 0, while it has a football shape for the IMF Bz greater than 0. It is also suggested that the thinning and subsequent expansion of the plasma sheet during magnetospheric substorms are partially due to a direct effect of the IMF Bz.
