A heterodyne detection system for the submillimeter wavelength range from 100 μm to 1,000 μm is described using a laser as local oscillator, a Schottky barrier diode in an open structure mixer and an acousto-optical spectrometer. During observing flights with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory the authors detected the CO (J = 7-6) in OMC-1 with a signal-to-noise of 50 and a resolution of 0.5 km/s. They also made the first detection of the same CO line in W3, DR21 and detected the neutral carbon line (3P2-3P1) in OMC-1, NGC 1977 and NGC 2024.
