The basic characteristics of protostellar forming regions are examined based on recent millimetre and submillimetre wavelength observational studies. From consideration of the likely excitation conditions of the material in these regions the important role which FIRST will play in the characterisation of their physical environment is discussed. Finally, constraints on the design of the FIRST payload are suggested, based on the astrophysical objectives which are currently envisaged for studies of protostellar forming regions.
