The status of observational astronomy in the 1990s is surveyed on the
basis of the proposed programmes of various national and international
agencies. The multi-disciplinary nature of all contemporary astronomy is
emphasised. The unique features of submillimetre astronomy from space
are described and examples of important programmes are outlined.
