The hypothesis that the galactic magnetic field is primordial is considered. If only the differential rotation of the galaxy is included, then flux freezing implies the galactic field is wound up 25 times, in contradiction with observations. If it is realized that the field is imbedded only in the ionized component, then rapid ambipolar diffusion of this component in clouds leads to a very small amount of wrap-up of order one radian. This amount seems consistent with observations. If the torque-induced radial motion of the clouds is included, then the wrap-up is stronger by a factor of two.
