A sequence of linear combinations of spherical functions is constructed to approximate the earth's disturbing potential. This sequence converges faster than a traditional partial sum series in spherical functions. A series in Chebyshev polynomials is used as an intermediate one. An account is given of how this technique can be applied to the approximation of the potential of any earth-type planet.
