We are currently engaged in a long-term project which aims to use 2MASS and POSS II data to complete the census of M and L dwarfs within 20 parsecs of the Sun. Our initial analysis used photometric criteria to identify candidate dwarfs with spectral types M4 and later. We propose to use the GoldCam spectrograph on the 2.1-metre telescope to obtain intermediate resolution observations of a sub-sample of the brighter candidates. Our aim is to confirm the spectral classification; derive improved distance estimates from bandstrength measurements; and characterise the level of activity.
