The author considers homogeneous particles with a frequency-dependent index of refraction n = narcmin+inarcsec = 1+β(ω), |β(ω)| very low 1, in an outer electromagnetic field. From general considerations he derives an expression for the total scattering cross-section of these particles. He calculates the efficiency factor for the sphere, the infinite circular cylinder, and for an ellipsoidal particle with the main axes a = 1, b = 2, c = 1. In contrast with the ray approximation, the present method can be used to calculate the polarization of the scattered light from ellipsoids.
