By considering the degree of orbital circularity and synchronism an estimate of the degree of tidal interaction in the ellipsoidal variable systems is attained. The author finds that the orbits are (with a few exceptions) circularized and synchronized for P(d) ⪉ 2. The highly inhomogeneous nature of the ellipsoidal variable class becomes clear within the framework of analysis and the author discusses the evolutionary status of the more extreme systems.
