Observations of 53 candidate active galaxies, obtained at 400-750 nm with resolution about 1 nm using an image-dissector scanner and Boller and Chivens spectrograph at the Cassegrain focus of the 152-cm telescope at ESO, are reported, along with similar observations of eight galaxies, obtained elsewhere. The spectra are presented graphically, and the numerical data are given in a table and briefly characterized. The objects are found to comprise 18 Seyfert 1 galaxies, nine Seyfert 2 galaxies, one LINER, 32 galaxies with nuclear H II regions, and one star.
